Planner’s Comment
Although the map covers a large and varied area it did present two problems. Much of the woodland to the east is difficult to include as it is in small pockets enclosed by fences and vulnerable walls.
More of a problem was the lack of detail in certain areas of the map. In particular there was a lack of point features – which meant reliance on linear features for many controls. And as these tend to be comparatively easy to locate then the courses would have to be long. The emphasis would be on making good route choices rather than on micro navigation close to the controls. Some will feel that the result was too much in favour of running rather than mapwork. But I hope the courses were a fair test for all.
As a novice at planning this level of event I was particularly lucky to be able to call on the experience of Lindsey Knox as Controller - who throughout contributed above and beyond the call of duty. She tactfully steered me away from my wackier ideas and suggested improvements which she kindly allowed me to think were my own.

Controller's Comment
I think a lot of competitors were pleasantly surprised at the quality of Duns Wood and, although quite a few of you got your money’s worth, the comments about the area and courses were generally very favourable. This was Pete’s first time at planning a SoSOL and I reckon he did a first class job. With SI and overprinted maps Sheila and her ELO team provided a high quality event, and they are to be congratulated for doing this with so few helpers. Finally, apologies to the competitors who came across timber operations – it’s the usual story of sub-contractors who obviously hadn’t got the message from the landowner.
