Controller’s Report

It was, as the football pundits say, a game of two halves.  Those who arrived first were unrewarded for their punctuality as they found the entire competition area enveloped in cloud.  Early starters on the long courses were set navigational problems by the poor visibility; later starters complained that the visibility was too good.  (Perhaps the latter were at least disheartened by being able to see the climbing which lay in front of them!)

In the end the cloud hovered just above the level of the short courses, allowing everyone on the white and yellow courses to get round in a reasonably short time.  Winning times on most other courses were also satisfactory, despite green and light green competitors having rather more climbing than they may be used to.  Technically, I thought that Terry squeezed as much as he could out of an area which is too open to pose a great deal of difficulty.  The woods are mostly either too steep or too dense to be of much use, and the attractively-featured area between the start and finish is not big enough to pose any serious navigational problems (although I watched a few competitors having trouble finding the depression 197).  At the finish, I heard enough hard-luck stories to reassure me that not everyone had had an easy training run round.

If you haven’t run here before, you’ll just have to take my word for it that, on a clear day, the view from the trig point on Deuchrie Dod is magnificent!
