Planners Report
Thanks to everyone for turning
up on the day. With nearly 100 starters it makes the planning effort
worthwhile. I thought that I should try and squeeze a Green out of the area and
although it was hilly most seemed to have enjoyed the course and the route
choice involved. The original planning in March used the complex open area to
the west which would have made for rather better courses with less climb.
However permission to use this area was not possible due to the lambing season
being in full swing. Come back in the autumn and it might be possible. I felt
that the Orange course suffer most because of the amount of climbing involved;
so well done to all those who completed the course – had we been able to use
the area to the West there would have been less climb – honest. Thanks also to
Richard Beattie for controlling the event and making some useful suggestion
which made the courses better.

A note about the locked
gates on the day into the overflow car par. This was due to the Rangers
forgetting to open the gates as requested. Richard finally managed to make
contact some time after 1 pm by which time the Ranger was on the hill some 30
minutes from transport and that was parked near Bavelaw – hence the delay. I
trust it did not affect your enjoyment of the courses on offer.
Thanks also to the willing
helpers from ESOC who run the event so efficiently.
Controller/Organiser's
Report
Bonaly tends to be quite a
popular event so it was good to see this was no different with a total of 96
entries. It's particularly encouraging
to see lots of first-time orienteers and I hope everyone enjoyed the event.
It was unfortunate that due
to the lambing we weren't able to take advantage of the area of land to the
west of the map. This could have
offered some interesting legs and in fact Ben had made good use of this area on
first draft courses so it was a shame its use was out of the question. Ben did a good job to provide not just 4 but
5 courses so there was a good range on offer and on the day each course had a
healthy number of entries. Thanks to Sheila Strain and Katy Lessells for
correcting the vandalised control (196) during their run. I hope this problem
didn't cause many people to lose time. Apologies for the long walk to the event
for those that had to park at the bottom of the hill due to the problem with
the car park gate – I'll know to chase up the Rangers earlier next time. Finally, my thanks to the ESOC volunteers
for their help in running this event.
