Organiser's Comments
STAG wish to acknowledge the assistance received from
: Donald Petrie, SOA Professional Officer - access & parking
: Dave Prentice, Controller - advice, guidance & help on the day.
: Polly Freeman, Atholl Estates - access
: Tayside Police & Roads Department - travel & parking arrangements
: St.Andrew's Ambulance Corps (Glasgow) - First Aid Cover
: Pitlochry Scouts - use of Hall as base.
: Competitors for their support
As you will be aware, the parking was limited and for everyones' safety, Tayside Police insisted on the arrangements that were in place. After the event I learned that one competitor refused to abide by the request made by our marshals at the small junction onto the A9 - this is a disappointment.

My personal thanks must go to the STAG members - Jackie, Pauline, Myra & Bernie - as well as Robbie, Jason & Gerry - for their support throughout.

Once again the Event wasn't a great success financially mainly because map overprints were based on SoSoL 2 (160 attended) plus 20% per course. 240 maps were printed only 80 competitors turned up. The luxury of portaloos was just a non-starter for this event.

Planner's Comments
Plans were in place well in advance and with the Planner living in Pitlochry this seemed a logical approach. Unfortunately in September things were proving difficult for Gregor and I stepped in to the role.

Being able to get into a new map/area & plan is a pleasure I enjoy and Dalnamein was no different. I believe the area has a wee bit of everything and I was delighted to hear the positive comments on the day.

The map, I believe is good but not great and could benefit from a resurvey of the vegetation as in some places it seems to be rather dubious or doesn't actually exist.

The decision to go for overprinted maps was not difficult to make as it reduced tentage, board carrying etc and I believe enhanced the orienteering experience on what proved to be a cold winter day in the Scottish Highlands.

STAG achieved another 1st - the most Northerly Event in the South of Scotland Orienteering League ! Those who didn't come missed out on a great day!

Thank-you

Controller's Comments

It was quite a novel feeling to hear all those unconditional complimentary comments as runners came into the download.  Perhaps it didn't have quite the same frisson of excitement or buzz of Dalguise, (would the next competitor rate it as "a great course but really tough"; that was just too long"; "that was the most challenging course for a long time"; "that's some of the worst forest I've been in"?).  But it was good to hear universal praise which should be directed at Donald and Terry for first of all identifying the potential, (and seeing the underpass), and then persevering and overcoming various obstacles to ensure the event was staged.

The areas of pine and larch woodland were lovely and the moor at the SE end of the map had good running and contours which were intricate enough to make everyone think.  Terry's excellent courses used the map to great advantage and I just provided relatively minor tweaks.

It was somewhat reassuring, (and a relief), to see the great majority of times falling within the guideline ranges.  This was especially so as Terry had incorporated suggested changes to lengthen blue and brown - I was keeping a low profile!   Perhaps orange and brown could have even been a little longer.

The hardluck story of the day was Matthew McCullagh on brown, who after a fall into a bog, arrived at the next control to find he had no dibber - it might become an interesting fossil in a few millennia.

Finally praise to a very efficient STAG team for both their organisational ability and ability to withstand the cold while sitting in the tent.

Late News
Matthew's luck improved. Ian Hannah came in at the end of the day with a dibber he found on the course. (If only I had been so lucky at Fir Park.)
