Organiser's report

A big thank you to the ELO members who were able to come along and help. The courses seemed to be very well received, and the weather was near perfect for January.

One error concerned the mix-up between which scale of map was needed for which course. The fault was all mine, my only excuse was that ELO has never had to contend with different map scales before.

The string course may have been too long for some - does anyone know the recommended winning times for string?

Planner's Comments

After seeing the map of this new area for the first time, I initially had concerns that it would be difficult to set challenging courses on the featureless moorland area. However a lack of features hones the compass and orientation skills so I hope you were sufficiently challenged. The magnificent views over East Lothian from the Lothian Edge made planning and setting (and I hope running) the courses most enjoyable. My other main concern was the lack of paths and tracks for the White and Yellow. I had to resort to using fencelines and I also had to develop the indistinct path network in the interesting valley area to provide suitable courses.

The map was surveyed at the end of the long dry summer and my start area initially was a depression. By the beginning of January it had become a pond and most narrow marshes had become streams so a second map update was necessary. By event day the pond had become a loch and a start area rejig was necessary. Thanks to everybody that assisted on the day and helped retrieve the controls after the event.

Controller's Comments.

Controlling Pressmennan and Lothian Edge was a very pleasant experience, new area, new map and good winter weather. The terrain in places dictates some degree of difficulty and the open aspect is unavoidable. Course planning took this into account effectively in terms of length and difficulty. Winning times indicate this.

On reflection a little more consideration could have been given to the position of the flag at specific features and increasing the challenge by moving controls away from line features. Controls 127 Re-entrant/Eastern Re-entrant and 120 Ditch Junction caused one or two problems. I am, given the map and the features to locate these points, sure they were valid controls. Thanks to Dave Northcott and Trina Rogerson and to the members of ELO for making Sunday a fairly easy day for me.
